The Ernakulam Central Police on Tuesday registered a case against Boby Chemmanur following a complaint by Malayalam actor Honey Rose, accusing him of making repeated sexually inappropriate remarks that demeaned womanhood. The businessman faces charges under Section 75(4) (sexually coloured remarks) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material through electronic media) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
In her complaint, Rose highlighted sexual harassment she faced during the inauguration of Chemmanur's jewellery store in Alakode, Kannur, on August 7. She further detailed the difficulties she encountered on various platforms following the incident.
The actor has additionally lodged complaints against at least 20 YouTubers for using obscene thumbnails featuring her image in their videos. Acting on the advice of ADGP Manoj Abraham and Kochi City Police Commissioner Putta Vimaladitya, she met them personally before filing the complaint.
Taking to Instagram earlier, Rose issued a warning to Boby Chemmanur and his supporters, stating, “You may believe in the power of your wealth, but I trust India’s legal system.” She also indicated plans to take action against others who share similar attitudes.
Speaking to Manorama News, the actor clarified her decision to keep her identity public. “The insults were made directly in my name. I see no reason to conceal my identity when I’m raising this issue,” she asserted.
Earlier on Monday, police arrested Shaji, a Kumbalam native, for allegedly making offensive remarks against Honey Rose on Facebook. The arrest came after the actor filed a complaint on Sunday night highlighting highly offensive and disrespectful comments on one of her posts. Thirty other individuals also face similar charges in that case.
In a subsequent social media post, Rose strongly warned against using double entendres and ridiculing women online. She pointed out that such comments are often dismissed as the actions of disturbed individuals, but this time, she had chosen to take legal action to set a precedent.
