A popular adage in Malayalam goes ‘Athaazham kazinjaal arakkaatham nadakkanam,’ meaning you should take a short walk after dinner for better digestion. While modern healthcare experts might say yoga asanas like ‘vajraasan’ or drinking warm water are more effective techniques for the same, the post-dinner walk also has similar benefits. Alongside helping with digestion, it also has many other advantages. For instance, if you regularly crave a dessert or a snack after dinner, try walking for ten minutes as the distraction often makes the ‘temptation’ disappear. Here are a few other ways in which the walk can help:

1) It improves the body’s metabolism, regulates the blood sugar level, and prevents sudden hunger pangs. Studies say that going for a short stroll after dinner reduces insulin resistance and keeps your stomach feeling full.
2) Taking a stroll after dinner is great for nutrient absorption. When there is movement, the body processes the vitamins and minerals efficiently, increasing the absorption rate. So, the body gets more energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, making us healthier.

3) Bloating and acidity are the side effects of having a heavy dinner. Walking after dinner lightens the stomach, reducing the risk of acid reflux and bloating. Moreover, walking for ten minutes can prevent heartburn and indigestion.
4) Nighttime strolls can apparently improve your memory as they could increase the oxygen supply to the brain, giving you clarity and better comprehension. Many studies have proved that walking after meals could improve brain activities, help you concentrate and keep you stress-free. This habit may be particularly beneficial for those who enjoy reading before bed.

5) Taking a short walk will help those who struggle to fall asleep. The body will produce serotonin, which increases melatonin production, a sleep-inducing hormone. Moreover, walking keeps away stress and helps you relax. A relaxed mind is vital for enjoying a good night’s sleep and waking up with a refreshed mind and body the next morning.
