Hello
Renowned activist Medha Patkar speaks about the Wayanad landslide, linking it to unchecked development and highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices in ecologically fragile areas.
Patkar, the champion of the ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan’ movement said development motivated by profit alone is destructive.
According to Medha, tragedies such as the one in Wayanad occur when climate change combines with man’s greed to exploit nature.
Patkar also called for an environment-centric approach in administration in the wake of recurring natural calamities in Kerala.
She crossed the Bailey Bridge and observed the damaged houses and school buildings.
The court sentenced Patkar after considering the evidence before it and the fact that the case went on for over two decades.
Patkar has dismissed the allegations against her as 'wrong', saying she had a full account and audit of the expenses and hinted at political reasons behind the allegations.
Speaking at a protest meet against the CPM-led Kerala government's ambitious SilverLine semi high speed rail corridor project, Patkar said what the state needed was development not destruction.
Medha Patkar says how much of environmental impact the project will cause is not known because it's not even studied.
The chief minister told Medha that the government is willing to examine any complaint raised by the people regarding the development of the national highways in Kerala.
