Tatkal, the ticket booking scheme that allows passengers to travel on short notice, is quite popular among rail passengers. However, messages about an upcoming change in the booking timings have been doing the rounds on social media. The Indian Railways has dismissed such claims and has clarified details on the Tatkal booking timings in a social media post. The explanation was posted on IRCTC’s official X platform. IRCTC said that ‘some posts circulating on social media channels mention different timings for Tatkal and Premium Tatkal.’ Railways clarified that AC and non-AC could be booked as Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets. The permitted booking timings for agents also remain unchanged.
Tatkal and premium tatkal
Tatkal tickets could be booked one day in advance, excluding the journey date. The AC tickets could be booked on the opening day from 10 am onwards, while the booking for non-AC tickets commences at 11 am. For example, if the train departs from the originating station on August 2, then tatkal ticket booking commences at 10 am on August 1 and 11 am for non-AC tickets on the same day. A maximum of four passengers can be booked on a Tatkal ticket per PNR. Passengers need to pay tatkal charges in addition to the normal ticket fare. The timings for the premium tatkal tickets are as same as the tatkal.
