Kannur: Santosh Trophy player and Assistant Commander of Kerala Police, M Baburaj, passed away at 60. Widely regarded as one of the finest wing-backs Kerala has ever produced, Baburaj was an integral part of the state team clinched back-to-back Federation Cup titles in 1990 and 1991. He retired from the Kerala Police with the rank of Assistant Commander in 2020.

Baburaj breathed his last Saturday evening at his residence, Mottammal House, in Annoor. The cremation will take place on Sunday at 10 am at the Moorikkovval community cremation centre.

Baburaj also played a pivotal role in the Kerala Police team’s triumphs at the National Police Games and the prestigious Malik Trophy. His presence was felt in numerous tournaments, including the Kannur Sreenarayana Cup.

His football journey began in his hometown, where he played for Payyanur Sports Club and Blue Star Club. While studying at Payyanur College, he garnered attention by helping the Calicut University team secure the South Zone title in 1985.

In his service with the Kerala Police, he was posted at the Malappuram MSP and Pandikkad RRRF camps.

Baburaj is survived by his wife, U Pushpa, sons M Sujin Raj and M Subin Raj, and daughter-in-law Prakrithipriya.
