Salah breaks Premier League record as Liverpool inch closer to title

Mohamed Salah broke a Premier League record as Liverpool defeated West Ham 2-1 to inch closer to the title.
Liverpool have extended their lead at the top to 13 points after Arsenal slipped up on Saturday, following a 1-1 draw with Brentford. With six rounds remaining, Liverpool are in prime position to clinch their second Premier League title.
Salah's assist for Luis Diaz' opener in the 18th minute took his goal contributions (goals and assists) to 45, surprassing the record of 44 held by Erling Haaland (2022-23) and Thierry Henry (2002-03).
Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole made 47 goal-contributions in the Premier League in the 1994-95 and 1993-94 seasons, but back then the league had 22 teams as opposed to 20 now, meaning each club played 42 games in a season, unlike 38, which has been the norm since the 1995-96 season.
Liverpool had to dig deep to find a winner in the match after West Ham scored an equaliser in the 86th minute. Captain Virgil Van Dijk scored the late winner in the 89th minute for the Reds.
Ahead of kickoff, a minute's silence was held at Anfield to honour the 97 victims of the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster.
