The state government has issued administrative sanctions to install dome fencing at critical points along the Amayizhanjan canal at a cost of Rs 5.54 crore.
The decision was based on a proposal submitted by the Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Administration, for the fencing work along the canal at various locations.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened a meeting in July 2024 to discuss issues related to the dumping of waste in the canal after the death of sanitation worker Joy.
He went missing in the canal during cleaning, and his body was found under the Uppidamoodu bridge at Pazhavangadi two days later.
The city corporation and the state government faced a huge public uproar after Joy lost his life. The corporation also locked horns with the Railways over the dumping of waste in the canal.
The proposed fencing will cover a total length of 2236 metres. The government has directed that the rubble obtained from the demolition of existing stone masonry shall be reused.
It has been directed that sufficient provisions be provided for the fencing to facilitate emergency operations and cleaning purposes.
