The Indian Navy on Wednesday said that it seized 2,500 kg of narcotics in the western Indian Ocean during its regular patrol on March 31. A search of suspicious vessels led to the seizure of 2,386 kg of hashish and 121 kg of heroin.
The Navy's frontline frigate, INS Tarkash, was conducting routine patrols when it received information on suspicious vessels suspected of being involved in illicit activities in the western Indian Ocean.

The ship altered its course and intercepted the dhow with coordinated efforts with the Navy's P8I aircraft and the Maritime Operations Centre in Mumbai. "The ship launched its integral helicopter to monitor the activities of the suspicious vessel and identify other vessels likely operating in the area," the Navy said in a statement.
A specialist boarding team, including Marine Commandos, boarded the vessel and discovered sealed packets. Further search revealed more than 2500 kg of hashish and heroin stored in different cargo holds and compartments.
The crew of the dhow was questioned about their modus operandi and the presence of similar vessels in the area. "This seizure underscores the effectiveness and professionalism of the Indian Navy in deterring and disrupting illicit activities, including narcotics trafficking at sea," it said.
