Agali: Noted social worker Uma Preman has come up with low-budget houses to rehabilitate the flood-hit people. The prefabricated houses have been set up at the Santhi Graman, the rehabilitation center founded by the philanthropist in Attapady. The removable houses, built in metal sheets and iron pipes can be easily relocated to different places.
These houses can be built on tall pillars at the flood-prone areas. The 350 sft house has two bedrooms, kitchen, a living area and a bathroom. It would cost only Rs 2.5 lakh to construct the house, which can be altered according to the interests of the inhabitants.
Experts assure that these prefabricated houses would stand strong for at least 40 years. Installation to guard the house from lightning strikes will also be erected.
The cost of construction would be borne by the client. However, Uma Preman said that many have approached her expressing willingness to sponsor such houses for those who lost their houses in the recent flood. Trained Santhi Gramam workers would be building the houses which are named ‘Emad Koorai’.
