The much-awaited return of Indian stars to domestic cricket did not go well on Thursday, the first day of the resumption of the Ranji Trophy campaign.
India's Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma and fellow national stars Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and Shivam Dube were dismissed cheaply for their respective teams.
Rohit's return to the Mumbai Ranji team against Jammu and Kashmir brought a crowd to the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy at BKC. However, many spectators reportedly left early after Rohit was dismissed for just three runs by Umar Nazir. Three overs before Rohit walked back, India opener Jaiswal was trapped leg-before by Auqib Nabi for four runs.
Iyer, who batted down the order in the Mumbai side led by Ajinkya Rahane, lasted a tad longer but fell for 11, and Shivam Dube was sent back before opening his account. Shardul Thakur came to Mumbai's rescue with 51 runs, but the hosts folded for 120.
Pant, Gill disappoint
Around the same time, another national star, Rishabh Pant, came out to bat for Delhi against Saurashtra at Rajkot. Pant stepped in at the fall of the third wicket but couldn't last longer than 10 balls and went back after making just one run. Delhi were bowled out for 188.
In Bengaluru, Shubman Gill is leading Punjab against Karnataka. But the opener could not lead by example and fell for just four runs. Punjab were bowled out for a paltry 55 runs, with Koushik V bagging four wickets and Abhilash Shetty claiming two.
