Alappuzha: An elderly woman brutally attacked by a stray dog succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday at Arattupuzha here. The deceased is Chirayil Karthiayani (88) of Arayanchira in Thakazhi.

According to police sources, Karthiayani's son Prakasan and his wife left for Kottayam around 10.30 am to visit their daughter. Karthiayani, alone at home and resting in the front yard, was attacked by a stray dog. Prakasan, who returned home by 3.30 pm, found Karthiayani lying on the ground with her face completely bitten off, among other injuries.

Though she was rushed to Vandanam Medical College Hospital, Karthiayani could not be saved, Thrikkunnapuzha Circle Inspector Shajimon told Onmanorama. Karthiayani lived with Prakasan in Arattupuzha. The body will be handed over to the family after the postmortem.
