India is all set to tighten its immigration laws per the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025. The country will roll out the new rules to strengthen national security and make visa procedures easier. This will also encourage the tourism sector and ensure financial growth.
Travel documents are mandatory
Valid travel documents are mandatory for those who travel outside the country and enter the Indian border. They should carry a valid visa and passport. Entering the country without proper documents will attract imprisonment of up to five years and a penalty of Rs 5 lakh.
Hefty fine for fake documents
Using or submitting fake documents is punishable under the law. If found guilty, hefty fines of Rs 1 lakh up to Rs 10 lakhs may be imposed.
Visa violations
Foreigners violating visa regulations or staying in the country after their visa expires may be apprehended. This offence could attract a jail term of up to three years and/or a fine of Rs 3 lakh.
Institutions should report
Hotels, schools, and hospitals that host foreigners or arrange accommodation for them should furnish their details to the concerned authorities. This would help the authorities locate foreigners who are staying in the country after their visa expires.
Airlines should check documents
Airline companies and shipping corporations should ensure that foreign passengers carry proper and valid travel documents. If they fail to screen or verify the documents properly, the airline and shipping companies will be fined heavily.
The authorities will have the power to cancel or reject a visa for a person who is a potential threat to national security.
