Ooty vendors declare hartal on April 2, against e-pass: Tourist tips

Displeased by the e-pass restrictions, the merchants in Ooty have called for a protest, citing that the system has affected their livelihood. They will protest by tying black flags in front of their shops and on the vehicles on March 29. Besides, a hartal has been declared in Nilgiri on April 2. Restrictions would be imposed on the entry of tourist vehicles from April 1 to June 30. Only up to 6000 vehicles would be allowed to enter the Nilgiri district on the weekdays, while 8000 vehicles can enter on Saturdays and Sundays. Meanwhile, there are no restrictions on the movement of vehicles registered in the Nilgiri district.
The restrictions come into effect following an order from the Chennai High Court to regulate crowds during the season. The merchants question the logic behind allowing just 6000 vehicles into Nilgiri, with six taluks and four municipalities, while 4000 vehicles can enter Kodaikanal, a municipality. They believe the latest changes would hamper the district's tourism industry scope. Many resorts and cottages in Ooty survive mainly on the income earned during the peak season in April – May. Last year, the merchants also protested the implementation of the e-pass. Here's what tourists should know when in Ooty during a hartal:
1) All commercial establishments, including hotels, shops, and restaurants, can remain closed. Make alternate arrangements if you plan to dine out, shop, or explore such amenities.
2) There will be limited availability of public and private transport options like auto-rickshaws and taxis. If you are in Ooty around the time, be prepared with your plan B for such circumstances.
3) If hartal supporters block roads, access to popular sites is restricted.
4) Ensure you have the necessary food, water, and medications.
