'Riptide': A bold, emotional cinematic statement on queer life by debutant Afrad VK

Deeply emotional and thought-provoking, Afrad VK's debut feature film, 'Riptide', presents a rebellious and powerful cinematic experience. With a strong political undertone addressing subtle yet pervasive discrimination against gay individuals, Afrad defies conventional storytelling to craft a film that is both intensely personal and universally resonant.
Set in a retro, undefined past, 'Riptide' blends melancholy, love, and raw human emotions into its narrative. The film follows Sukhu (Swalah Rahman) and Charlie (Faris Hind), two final-year college students and hostel mates who are deeply in love. Their relationship faces unexpected turbulence as they prepare to leave college after their exams. Sukhu's temporary departure for medical treatment leaves Charlie grappling with solitude, leading to unforeseen consequences. Upon Sukhu's return, the story takes a sorrowful turn, unravelling layers of pain, love, and despair. The evocative cinematography by Abhijith Suresh adds a distinct visual texture to the film.
With entries to the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in the Kaleidoscope category and a world premiere at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) 2024, Afrad has made a bold foray into world cinema with 'Riptide'.
Afrad also introduces an intriguing subplot involving an English character named Dawson. Initially appearing disconnected, this subplot ultimately enriches the narrative's emotional depth. "There's nothing to understand rationally," the director explains unapologetically, showcasing his rebellious spirit. "I wanted the audience to detour, experience another time and space, and then return to the main plot."
Breaking away from mainstream trends, Afrad deliberately weaves a melancholic yet fantastical tone into his linear-meets-non-linear narrative. "While others made conventional love stories, I created a gay love story. When everyone focused on raw realism, I embraced fantasy and melancholy," he shares. He adds, "People complain about films making them sleepy, so I decided to make them even sleepier—offering a great sleep."
Despite its minimal budget, 'Riptide' achieves a natural and authentic aesthetic. Afrad's meticulous attention to detail ensured the costumes, props, and production design transported viewers seamlessly to another era. The team demonstrated that compelling cinema isn't confined to big budgets by sourcing accessories and costumes through personal connections and creative resourcefulness. "Film is often called a rich man's game, but with effort, trust, and perseverance, it's possible to create magic with limited resources," Afrad emphasises.
For him, the IFFR and IFFK selections are surreal milestones. "We never expected anyone to see this film. The process was always about having fun and staying true to our vision," he reflects.
