You should check carefully to find the cameras that cannot be seen at a glance. Two-way mirrors are another threat that may jeopardise your safety. Can smartphones detect hidden cameras?
If you do not have any devices, you could use a simple, smartphone to find hidden cameras through flashlight reflection and infrared light detection.
Smartphone flashlight
Cameras will have a lens that reflects light. Switch off the lights in the room and shine the flashlight from the mobile phone on the spots where cameras are likely to be hidden. Flash the torch towards clocks, mirrors and ventilations and check for any recording devices. If you find anything suspicious, thoroughly inspect the spot.

Smartphone camera
Although invisible to the naked eye, hidden cameras emit infrared light, which smartphone cameras can detect. You should switch off or dim the lights in the room before looking for infrared rays. Open the camera app; some phones may require switching to the front camera for this. Now, slowly pan the camera across the areas where hidden cameras are likely to be spotted. Look for tiny, pulsing dots or glows on the mobile screen. These infrared lights confirm the presence of hidden cameras.
Camera detection apps
Camera detection applications can be downloaded to Android and iOS phones. These apps also use the phone’s camera and sensors to detect the hidden camera. The app developers claim these apps can detect infrared light emissions and magnetic fields. Make sure to follow the instructions in the app after downloading it.

Wifi network
Most hidden cameras use wifi networks to transmit footage. The presence of unknown devices could be identified by scanning the hotel’s wifi network. Open your phone’s wifi settings and view the list of connected devices. Look for unfamiliar device names like IP Camera or cameras. Similarly, you could use Bluetooth to scan for connected devices in the room. If you find anything suspicious, report them to the hotel management and alert the local authorities.
