Train journeys are one of India's safest and most comfortable modes of travel. Booking tickets in advance would make your travelling experience smooth and hassle-free. However, you might be unable to change the date or other details at the last moment, especially if the tickets were booked months ago. Have you ever wondered whether you could transfer the ticket in another passenger’s name in case you cannot travel on the booked date or even change the travel date? The Indian Railway allows passengers to change or edit the name of the passenger, date of travel and other details. These edits are possible in the following scenario:
Can you transfer a confirmed ticket?
Indian Railways allows passengers to transfer confirmed train tickets to another passenger. However, this is possible only for tickets booked offline through the reservation counters in railway stations, not those booked online through the IRCTC website or app.
Who can you transfer the ticket to?
There are specific guidelines about transferring a ticket booked in a person’s name to another passenger. The ticket can only be transferred to close family members like a father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, or husband or wife. Government officials or students who have had group bookings can also transfer the ticket within the group.
Changing passenger name
You must reach the nearby railway reservation office to change the name on the booked ticket. The changes should be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled travel. The application for changing the passenger name should be submitted along with the identity cards and other documents of the person in whose name the ticket has been booked and the one in whose name the ticket needs to be transferred. The officials there would receive these documents and initiate the process.

The ticket booked in one person’s name could be transferred to another person only once. Besides, this is possible only for the tickets booked offline via the reservation counters in railway stations, as mentioned earlier. The application for transferring the tickets or changing the passenger's name should be submitted within the stipulated time; otherwise, the application will be rejected. It must be noted that this facility is not applicable for the tickets that are booked online.
Changing the date of travel
Passengers who have booked train tickets online and offline could change the travel date. Meanwhile, the procedure for changing the date depends on the booking mode. If the ticket was booked offline, the date should be changed at least 48 hours before the scheduled travel at the reservation counter at the railway station. The original ticket could be handed over at the counter to change the date. However, you can only cancel the online ticket and then book another ticket. Besides, the passenger needs to pay the cancellation charges, too.
Points to remember
The date can be changed only once for a single ticket. The travel date can only be changed for confirmed or RAC tickets. It is not possible to change the dates of Tatkal tickets or those on the waiting list. The changes will be made based on the availability of seats on the new date.
