In this day and age, can you even imagine an eatery where a dosa is priced at a mere Re 1 and rasa vada at Rs 2? A hotel owned by an elderly woman named Bharathi, who is better known as Palakkonam Ammachi, serves the items at exactly these prices. The hotel is located at Palakkonam, near Aryanad in Thiruvananthapuram district.
Thanks to social media, Palakkonam Ammachi has now turned into a star in Kerala. The eatery serves tasty dishes at negligible rates and attracts foodies from all over the state.
As dosa is available at the food outlet only till 10 am every day, people queue up from early morning. Customers are willing to wait a long time to enjoy the food from Ammachi's eatery and vouch for its taste and the hygienic way of preparation. One can have a fill with just Rs 30, point out the local people who are regulars at the hotel.
Apart from dosa and rasa vada, other dishes, too, are available at very low rates here. For instance, a single omelet costs Rs 10, Bengal gram curry Rs 7 and pappadam Rs 2.
The hotel, which is now managed by Ammachi's daughter Valsala and her husband Anil Kumar, was started 70 years ago at another spot. It was shifted to the present location 35 years ago. According to the local people, Ammachi does not eye profits but runs the eatery as a noble cause.
