Maintaining a balanced diet is key to ensuring nutrition and healthy aging for our elderly parents. Foods rich in protein help build and strengthen muscles, which is essential during old age. Noted fitness trainer Navneet Ramprasad has shared a video on his social media handle explaining the significance of a healthy and wholesome diet for aging parents. “If you think rice, roti and dal can provide enough protein, then you are wrong. These four high-protein foods must be included in the diet of your aging parents for excellent digestion and their long-term well-being. Do not let age weaken your parents,” says Navneeth in the video. He also recommends four food items that are loaded with protein and help in strengthening the muscles and bones.
Tofu
Tofu is a protein powerhouse that contains nine essential amino acids that can strengthen muscles. Reducing inflammation and strengthening the bones is important to ensure the health and movement of the joints in ageing parents. Tofu has more protein and fewer carbohydrates, so it could be enjoyed as a perfect alternative for meat dishes. You could enjoy grilled or fried tofu, or add crumbled tofu to salads and curries to make them protein-rich.
Edamame
Edamame is one of the best sources of plant-based protein. It is amazing for repairing muscles and ensuring good insulin resistance. Edamame contains phytoestrogen, which supports hormone balance in women after menopause. Besides, it is an amazing source of fibre and antioxidants that can regulate the blood sugar level and improve digestion.
Nuts and seeds
Pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are rich in protein, magnesium, and healthy fats. Their anti-inflammatory properties support muscle recovery and reduce exhaustion. Moreover, magnesium can relax the muscles and prevent constipation. Nuts and seeds are great for aging parents as they can tackle many health problems.
Greek yoghurt
Greek yoghurt is a great source of protein and has less fat. It can prevent muscle loss while strengthening the muscles. Meanwhile, the probiotics in Greek yoghurt can improve digestion and boost immunity. Rich in protein, Greek yoghurt helps in the slow expulsion of amino acids.
