Athirappalli and Vazhachal, the two breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls, are highly soughtafter picnic spots in Kerala. Located in Thrissur district, 1,000 ft above sea level, the cascades are at the edge of the Sholayar forest ranges of the Western Ghats and just 5 km apart. The Athirappalli Falls joins the Chalakkudy River after plummeting down a drop of 80 feet, which makes it one of the largest waterfalls in the state. Vazhachal is part of the Chalakkudy River. Both the waterfalls, their cool, misty waters cascading down in the backdrop of thick green forest and rocky terrain, are a scintillating experience to visitors. Chapra Falls, just 1.5 kms away from Athirappalli is another beautiful cascade in this area. There are also two amusement parks within 30 km radius of Athirappalli. A good part of the Mani Ratnam movie Ravan was shot here.
