HMPV outbreak: Kerala health minister advises elderly, pregnant women to wear masks

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is carefully assessing reports of global viral fever and respiratory infections, said Health Minister Veena George. While there is no need for panic, the minister recommended that pregnant women, the elderly, and those with serious illnesses wear masks as a precaution.
No reports currently indicate the presence of rapidly spreading or pandemic-potential viruses from China in the State. However, vigilance is necessary given the significant presence of Malayalis worldwide and the influx of expatriates from regions including China. There have been no reports of significant genetic mutations in Chinese viruses that could trigger a pandemic, but caution is still advised, the minister stated.
If no major genetic mutations have occurred in the virus, the HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is unlikely to pose a severe threat. However, respiratory illnesses in children and the elderly should be closely monitored. The government is already doing this. Travellers arriving from China or other nations with respiratory symptoms will also be observed carefully. At present, no special restrictions are required for expatriates.
The minister emphasised that new genetic variants of COVID-19 continue to remain a concern. If pneumonia cases being discussed in China are linked to new COVID variants, Kerala must stay alert. Infections like Human Metapneumovirus, which primarily affect children, the elderly, and those with severe illnesses or undergoing palliative care, require particular attention. Parents are advised not to send unwell children to school, and those with respiratory symptoms should wear masks. The minister reassured that there is no immediate cause for fear but urged people to maintain precautions.
