Mother of Sabu Thomas, who killed self after coop bank refused deposit, passes away

Thodupuzha: Thressiamma (90), the mother of Sabu Thomas, who died by suicide in front of a cooperative society in Kattappana, passed away on Tuesday. A resident of Pallikkal Mulangassery, Kattappana, she succumbed to age-related ailments after being bedridden for one and a half years due to a stroke. The funeral will take place today at 4 pm at St George Church. Sabu had approached the bank to withdraw his deposits to cover the medical expenses of his mother and wife.
In connection with Sabu’s death, the Director Board of the Kattappana Rural Development Cooperative Society has suspended three officials: Bank Secretary Reji Abraham, Senior Clerk Sujamol Jose, and Junior Clerk Binoy Thomas. The action was taken after Sabu’s suicide note named them as responsible for his death.
Sabu (56), a textile shop owner and former worker in Australia, was found hanging in front of the bank on December 20. In his suicide note, he accused Reji Abraham, Binoy Thomas, and Sujamol Jose of denying him access to his deposits and mistreating him.
Marykutty, Sabu’s wife, alleged that her husband was deeply upset after Binoy reportedly used abusive language and shouted at him when he requested his money. Sabu had repeatedly approached the bank to withdraw Rs 2 lakh for his wife’s surgery but was only given Rs 80,000 in two instalments. The bank reportedly refused to release the required amount, citing insufficient reserves due to previous loan distributions.
