'Even the coconuts of God's Own Country are begging for a cool drink,' said one of the popular memes in Kerala's social media sphere last summer. This year, if the reports are to be believed, various regions like Kannur and Kottayam are already figuring among the 'hottest places in the country' list, though we have only almost finished the month of January. While tips like staying hydrated, wearing cotton clothes, and staying indoors can be helpful to an extent in preventing thermal injuries like sunburns, they might not be of much help if you have to head out at noon. Here's a handy checklist to ensure you are protected when you are outside in the hot son:

1) Broad-spectrum sunscreen
Visit your dermatologist before the onset of extreme summer days and seek help to pick a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF (Sun Protection Factor) or higher. You can also ask for water-resistant sunscreens if you tend to sweat excessively. Whenever you have to head out, apply it generously in all exposed areas, like the face, neck, back of your hands, feet and more. Make sure that you apply the cream at least 30 minutes before stepping out so that it is absorbed well into your skin. Every two hours, take a break and reapply it.

2) Carry a spray bottle
A quick spray of water on your face or feet can lower your body's temperature, if you feel excessively hot while outside. Therefore, carrying a bottle of cold water with a spray attached to it can give your body a hydration boost whenever required. Depending on your skin receptivity, you can also add rose water, aloe vera, or even mint leaves to this water to give it an aromatic, cooling sensation. However, do not overdo it, as excess dust can also attach to your body with water.

3) Breathable, covered shoes
It's important to let air pass through your skin and fingers to reduce the heat buildup on your feet, so that your overall body temperature doesn't rise. Look for lightweight footwear that covers your feet enough but doesn't irritate your skin and would preferably go with all kinds of attire. If required, pair it with moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry.

4) Frequent breaks
Heading out during summer can in itself be a stressful activity for your body. Therefore, it is important to take breaks whenever possible to hydrate yourself, cool your body in the shade, or even pay attention to exhaustion symptoms, if any. The small break can also recharge you further and take any necessary steps required to protect your body.
