There is definitley a purpose behind two buttons on the toilet flush tank

Changes according to time can be seen in every aspect of house construction. Toilets have also undergone several changes over time. These differences can be seen in everything from the shape of the toilet seat and the capacity of the flush tanks to the buttons on top of the tanks. A design incorporating two buttons above the flush tank is now found in most homes. While both are used alternately as per convenience, many are unaware of the purpose behind including these two buttons.

This design includes one larger button and one relatively smaller button. This is called a dual flush toilet. There is a definite reason for including these options. Each button is connected to its own exit valve.

The purpose behind this is to avoid unnecessary wastage of water. When flushing with the larger button, the amount of water discharged will be between approximately six and nine litres. If the smaller button is used, only three to four and a half litres of water is used for flushing. That is, by choosing the correct button as needed, excessive water wastage can be avoided. It is estimated that installing toilets with a dual flushing option can save up to twenty thousand litres of water per year in a household compared to ordinary flush systems.

These are more expensive than ordinary flushing systems. However, when considering the long-term savings on water bills, this should not be considered an additional expense. Another advantage is that it ensures the efficiency of the plumbing system. When less water is flushed without extra pressure, the chances of strain on the plumbing system are also reduced. Powerful flushing is a feature of dual-flush toilets. This helps reduce blockages in the toilet pipe and clean the toilet without having to flush multiple times.

Things to note in the maintenance of dual flush toilets:

• Along with cleaning the toilet bowl and rim, care should be taken to disinfect and clean the flush buttons. However, take special care not to apply excessive force.
• Regular inspections should be carried out to ensure that there are no leaks or blockages in the flushing system.
• Care should be taken not to flush wipes, sanitary napkins, etc., into the toilet. Due to the lower volume of water, these are more likely to cause blockages in the pipes.
