This savoury dish that has the perfect spiciness from the flavoursome masala and light sweetness from the caramelized onions tastes fabulous with chapathi, porotta or rice. Here is the pretty simple recipe of onion chicken.
Ingredients
1 kg chicken
4 onions (thinly sliced)
3 tomatoes (cut into small pieces)
8 - 10 pepper corns
2 small cinnamon pieces
4 -5 cloves
3 -4 cardamom pods
1 inch piece of ginger
3 -4 garlic cloves
½ tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder
1 tsp regular chilli powder
1 tbsp lime juice
1 ½ cups oil
Salt as required
Preparation
Marinate the chicken pieces with salt, lime juice, 1 ½ tsp Kashmiri chilli powder and ¼ tsp turmeric powder
Set it aside for at least half an hour
Grind the pepper corns, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, garlic and remaining turmeric powder and chilli powder by adding some water
Heat oil in a pan and fry the onions until they turn brown in colour
Set the fried onions aside
Transfer 1 ½ tbsp oil from this pan into a non stick pan
Sauté the masala paste until the raw smell of it is gone
Now add the tomato and sauté until they turn mushy
Crumble the fried onions gently and add into this masala mixture
Mix well
Into it add the marinated chicken
Mix well and cook with the lid on
Mix and stir occasionally
Chicken would be cooked in 30 - 35 minutes
You could add curry leaves if required
Tasty onion chicken is ready.
