Vetrimaaran-backed 'Bad Girl' teaser drops, but faces ire for misrepresenting Brahmins

The teaser of 'Bad Girl', a film backed by Vetrimaaran and presented by Anurag Kashyap has drawn flak from a section of people, including filmmaker G Mohan who claimed the film hurt religious sentiments. The movie written and directed by Varsha Bharath revolves around a teenage girl who is on the cusp of exploring her first love. In the teaser, she reveals that she has always wanted a boyfriend, but the scrutiny she faces from her parents and the dissuasion from her friends almost prevent her from experiencing the joy of sex, among others. When she finally leaves for college, she opts for a different life. "Portraying a brahmin girl personal life is always a bold and refreshing film for this clan. What more can be expected from vetrimaran, Anurag kasyap & Co.. Try with your own caste girls and showcase it to your own family first (sic)," said the director who helmed 'Draupathi' and 'Bakasuran," while sharing filmmaker Pa Ranjith's post appreciating the movie. The film powerfully portrays women’s struggles and society’s expectations through a unique new wave cinema style. Congratulations," Pa Ranjith wrote on X.
The film featuring actor Anjali Sivaraman will premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The makers released the teaser with the caption, "From her journey through high school and college, then out into the wider world, Ramya's dream of finding the perfect guy is obstructed by societal mores, strict parents, unrequited love and the untrammeled chaos of her own mind, in Varsha Bharath's naughty and affecting comedy.
