Kolkata: The name Mohun Bagan is synonymous with ISL champions. Continuing their fine form throughout the tournament, Mohun Bagan Super Giants defeated Bengaluru FC in the final of the Indian Super League here on Saturday for a scoreline of 2-1.

The victory marks the Kolkata team's fifth ISL title, winning it three times as ATK and two times as Mohun Bagan Super Giants. The title brings 'more joy' to the club, which earlier won the ISL shield for finishing at the top of the points table.

Bengaluru were the first to open the scoring, with an own goal from Alberto Rodriguez gifting them a lead at the Salt Lake Stadium. But a penalty awarded to Bagan in the 72nd minute was converted by Jason Cummings to equalise the score. Jamie McLaren scored in the 96th minute to make the score 2-1 and seal the victory for the home side.

The first half ended goalless, with both teams failing to create good chances. However, both teams changed their approach in the second half and intensified their efforts for a goal.

But the home side was shocked in the 49th minute. Rodriguez failed to clear a cross into the box from Ryan Williams, and the ball deflected off his boots straight into the goal.  Even goalkeeper Vishal Kaith couldn't do much to stop the ball.

Following this, Bagan made serious attempts to score an equaliser, but in vain. The Mariners' attempts were rewarded in the 72nd minute of the game. Bagan players stormed in from the left wing, and Maclaren crossed the ball into the box for Jason Cummings. In an attempt to stop Cummings, Chinglensana went after the player but accidentally got his arms on the ball.

The referee pointed to the penalty spot. Cummings made no mistake, and Bagan equalised.

The scoreline remained intact till 90 minutes and the match was extended to extra time. The 96th minute, Maclaren received the ball from the left wing. He went past the Begaluru defender with a touch of brilliance and aimed at the goal. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu failed to stop hispowerful shot, handing Bagan the much needed lead.

All that remained for the Mariners was to hold their ground, and they did just that, sealing the victory at the end of extra time.
