Njandirukki waterfalls given short shrift

Thodupuzha, Ernakulam: The Njandirukki waterfalls, near Poomala, in the Velliamattam panchayat in Ernakulam district unleash its mesmerising beauty in the rains. The sight of the crystal-clear water meandering through the huge rocks is truly incredible. But the locals complain that the officials are averse to utilising the scope for monsoon tourism.
Though several developmental projects were introduced in the area in the past few years, it failed to attract the tourists. Lights projected to the waterfalls further enhance the beauty of it, especially at night. But the lights which were erected a few years ago do not function anymore. These lights had worked on the electricity produced from a mini-hydro power project at the waterfalls itself.
Many lights and other objects were stolen as security services are not hired in the area. The fact that the Njandirukki waterfall is accident-prone too, adversely affected its potential as a tourist spot.
However, locals demand that the officials should take actions to introduce the necessary safety measures, so that more number of tourists could visit the extremely beautiful waterfalls. Though the Ilamdesam block panchayat has conceived a project to develop the tourism in the area, it has not been executed yet.
