Diving down Havelock’s ocean depths to say 'I Do'

The concept of “I thee wed” atop mountain peaks, underwater, in aeroplanes and where not, is passé or so it would seem. When all things weird are the new normal, a marriage in the ocean depths to say “I Do” should be quite an enticing prospect, something which the Havelock Island Beach Resort in the Andamans is exploiting. This is the only beach resort in India where facilities for ocean vows are on offer. The sea venue? The Indian Ocean, to be precise.
Though takers for the ocean wedding are many, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but for those riding high on the spirit of adventure, always on the lookout for something out of the ordinary.
Gliding down the coral seas are not just the bride and groom, but relatives and well-wishers too. Under the depths stands a small stage decorated with coconut shells, flowers and palm leaves. Underwater communication is via written placards, though.
Havelock or Sawraj Island with its pristine white sand and coral blue waters is one of the most picturesque places in the Andaman-Nicobar group of islands. There are regular ship services to the place from Chennai and Kolkata and flights from almost all major cities. Tourists can book berths or seats on luxury liners that ferry passengers from Port Blair across to Havelock Island.
Luxury cottages, poolside parties, venues for get-togethers, cruise bookings, beach bars, restaurants and several other facilities are available in Havelock. Cottage rents are set at Rs 5000 and above for a day.
