At least 5,601 people were killed in Haiti last year as a result of gang violence, an increase of over 1,000 on the total killings for 2023, according to figures verified by the UN Human Rights Office. A further 2,212 people were injured and 1,494 kidnapped.
The adoption of the resolution comes after four failed attempts
The Council is composed of five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members
The permanent members, who were totally opposed to the idea of new permanent members, have a more flexible position now as a consequence of the anticipated changes in the global order.
Speaking at the UNSC briefing on Ukraine on Thursday, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said India remains on the side of peace.
He questioned the value of the 15-member UNSC, which has been unable to take any action over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
