Wayanad: A six-month-old elephant calf, which crossed into human habitation on January 13 after being attacked by a tiger and later abandoned by its herd, died at the elephant camp in Muthanga on Wednesday.

Forest officials had initially managed to reunite the calf with its herd, but it was later found roaming near the forest borders. The calf was under treatment for multiple leg injuries and was showing signs of recovery. However, its condition deteriorated in the early hours of Wednesday.

''Though we initially hoped for its survival, its condition worsened unexpectedly. Elephant calves abandoned by their herd, often due to illness or injuries from predator attacks, rarely survive,'' said a forest official. After a post-mortem examination, officials buried the carcass deep inside the forest.
