Marayoor: In a first in Kerala, a nun has been appointed as the medical officer in a government hospital in Kerala. Dr Rosamma Thomas (50), aka Sr. Jean Rose of the Sisters of the Destitute, recently took charge as the medical officer at the Family Health Centre (FHC) in Marayur. She worked as an anaesthesiologist for over a decade at a private hospital owned by the church before clearing the PSC exam and entering the government service.

Although she was appointed at the Kattapana Taluk hospital, she requested a transfer to the hospital in Marayur, as she is familiar with the place and the people there. Sr. Jean Rose completed her MBBS and post-graduation in anaesthesiology from the reputed St. John’s Medical College in Bengaluru. She is the daughter of Pala natives Mukalel Thomas and Rosamma. Dr Sr. Jean is also busy launching several developmental projects at the hospital with the support of the staff and elected representatives. The sister said that she was keen to work at Marayur, where many tribal settlements exist.

The Marayur FHC
The FHC in Marayoor serves 25 tribal hamlets in the region. More than 200 patients are catered to here every day. Speaking to an English daily, Sr Jean said she is also involved in immunisation drives for infants belonging to tribal communities, which needs the team to trek for over 18 km into the forest. Apparently, the tribal people retreat further into jungles when they see strangers. However, the immunisation team is trying to gain their trust with the help of Anganwadi teachers and government officials.
