Oiling the hair is an integral part of the bathing ritual in India. Although oiling nourishes the hair strands, having oily residues on the scalp may not be great as it attracts dirt and dust. Even if you oil the hair, make sure to wash it off using a mild shampoo or natural cleaning agents. Oil should be applied only after understanding the right texture of your hair. If you go out every day, it is better to oil your hair only twice or thrice a week.

Meanwhile, some are curious whether oil should be applied to the scalp or the hair. Some people have really dry and flaky scalps and dandruff, too. Those who have dry scalps can use any oil. But, people with dandruff should not use oils that are thicker. Moreover, they should make sure to wash off the oil after some time. Hibiscus flower, fenugreek powder and mung bean powder could be used to clean the scalp.

How oil helps
Hair oil cannot make your hair grow when you massage the scalp after oiling. The blood circulation increases, stimulating hair growth. It is better to avoid hair oils that are available in the market. Even if they are marketed as natural, these oils may contain chemicals and preservatives. So, making your own hair oil at home is the best idea. Pure coconut oil, too, could be used as a soothing hair oil.

Ensure to apply oil only after removing knots in the hair. Do not comb the hair after applying oil, as it may lead to hair fall. Apply the oil on the scalp and hair, massage well and leave it on for at least an hour before washing off. Those with dry hair can only apply oil on the hair strands to prevent split ends.
