Two months after five people who slept inside a roadside tent were killed after being run over by a lorry in Thrissur, the state government has woken up to the growing need for safe night shelter for street dwellers. The local-self government department has sanctioned the state's city corporations to take up projects to build shelters to house people who sleep in front of shops and on the streets at night.
The order was issued based on a decision made during the state coordination committee meeting. In the meeting held in December, it was decided that corporations can take up projects to construct shelters for street dwellers. The local-self government department was directed to take further steps to implement the decision.
As per the order issued by the LSGD, the corporations in Kerala shall take steps to survey street dwellers in urban areas. In November 2024, a speeding lorry rammed into a group of nomadic people and killed five, including two children, at Nattika. The lorry veered off the NH, jumped a divider and ran straight into the tent, crushing the people sleeping inside. They were settled in the area where the road work was underway. Vehicles were not allowed to cross this area due to the work.
