A day after Uma Thomas MLA sustained grievous injuries following a fall from the stage set up for a dance event at Kaloor stadium, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), which runs the stadium, blamed the organisers for violating safety provisions. GCDA Chairman K Chandran Pillai said the body will conduct a high-level inquiry.

"We had granted permission to the organisers to use the stadium for the event. They, however, erected a temporary platform for lighting the lamp event, which lasted around five minutes. There were strict conditions on safety and other aspects in the agreement. The organisers have violated the conditions. Police have already registered a case and we will also initiate legal action," said Pillai.

He said that the agreement was comprehensive regarding safety. "While the temporary platform was built, they did not ensure a strong barricade. There was a ribbon tied to steel pipes, which acted as a barrier. It was a major lapse.  The MLA grabbed the ribbon, lost balance and fell down," said Pillai.

He said the organisers could have used the platform above the VIP pavilion, which is usually used for various purposes. "It's unclear why they went for a temporary platform," he said.

The GCDA will release the agreement today. A meeting will also be convened to formulate safety protocols for the future use of the stadium for similar cultural events.
