Perumbavoor: Five men died on the spot when the car they were travelling in collided with a bus carrying Sabarimala pilgrims around midnight on Thursday. The group from Elappara in Idukki was on their way to the Cochin International Airport to see off three Muscat-bound friends.
The deceased are Janeesh, 22, son of Stephen and Susa Mary from Thannikkanam; Unni, 20, son of Prameela and the late Roy from Chemmannu; Hiran (21), son of Haridas and Sudha; Vijay (25), son of Wilson and Jaya; and Jerin (20), whose brother Jibin (22) was slated to fly to Muscat on Thursday morning.
Jibin, son of Yesudas and Appi from Vakakkad, and Appu (20), son of Somarajan, were severely injured. Jibin has been admitted to the Sanjoe Hospital at Perumbavoor and Appu to the Rajagiri Hospital at Aluva.

Their car war rammed by a bus carrying Sabarimala pilgrims at Chelamattam on the MC Road at 12:45 am on Thursday. The five men died on the spot. The people in the area who were near the accident spot could take out only three of them from the mangled car. The other four men were taken out by the firemen after breaking open the mangled car.
Jibin was supposed to fly to Muscat with two other friends from Elappara. The other men and their companions and relatives were travelling in four cars and an autorickshaw. Jibin’s car was the last in the convoy.
His friends, Vishnu and Thomas, boarded their flight unaware of the accident.
The police suspect that the car was at top speed at the time of the accident. The small car was not meant for seven passengers. The bus driver might have been careless too, preliminary investigations suggest.
The bodies have been handed over to the relatives after post-mortem. Janeesh was a pickup van driver. He is survived by his parents and sister Janeesha. Jerin worked for a private company in Chennai.

Unni is survived by his mother and brother Praveen. Hiran has two siblings, Sujith and Haritha. Vijay, the driver of the car, is survived by wife Aswathi.
The stranded pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh later continued their journey to Sabarimala in another vehicle. Their belongings were kept in the Dharma Sastha Temple at Perumbavoor.
