In the glory of 75: SH college celebrates Platinum Jubilee

Sacred Heart College, Thevara popularly known as the SH college or Thevara college was established in June 16, 1944 by Rev. Fr. John Berchmans CMI and Rev. Fr. Francis Sales CMI.

The college began its journey with 276 students in the three intermediate programmes and degree programme in Commerce, Mathematics and Economics with an affiliation to the Madras University. Rev. Fr. Peter Thomas Pynumkal CMI was the college’s first principal.

In 1958 college got affiliated to the University of Kerala and in 1975, till then the prestigious men’s college in the city introduced coeducation. In 1983 the College came under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

In recognition of its record of consistently high academic performance, Sacred Heart College was chosen among the first batch of colleges to be accorded autonomous status in the state when for the first time autonomy for aided colleges became a historical reality in the state of Kerala in 2014, after a prolonged campaign by a few leading colleges, and pro-reform policy of the government, the department of higher education and the higher education council.

The college in 2019 stands in the glory of serving the society and contributing to the Malayali community for 75 long years. The management is planning to celebrate this achievement with a weeklong programme named 'JAMBOREE'.

As part of Jamboree the week long jubilee year celebrations various departments will be organising different programmes to mark the achievement. The SH School of communication will be organising COMHAR’19 an intercollegiate fest from 16th to 19th January.

Main events include a music band contest with prizes worth 30,000 to be won ,photography contest offering prizes worth 16,000 and poster designing contest with prizes worth 16,000 on offer. Other events include futsal, fifa, short film, graffiti CS-60 and PUBG.

The Commerce Association will be organising their annual tagline event Tandav, the fist intercollegiate commerce fest.

Department of Physics will be organising Eureka a physics quiz and the department of chemistry will be organising chemistry science quiz.

Department of Economics will be organising BOOM 2019 SH Economics Fest. Attractive prizes are on offer for winners of paper presentation, Quizzard, 3-A-Side, Cartoonomics, Ecobate and Budding Economist.

On January 18th Nazakal, a theme based inter collegiate fashion show competition will be organised.

Department of Zoology will be hosting GENYSYS 2019.Department of Sociology will be joining in with Sociofest 2019, the department of Mathematics will be hosting Kanakeecia, a state level intercollegiate mathematics fest and the department of English will be organising MERAKI’19, an intercollegiate English fest on January 16th and 17th.

The speakers' forum of the college will be conducting their annual literary pentathlon on 22nd of January. The highlight of this year’s event will be a symposium on the topic Faith vs. Reason, in the contemporary Kerala context. Dr Sunil P Ilayidom and Rev. Dr. Paul Thelakkat will be the invited speakers and Sri. Johny Luckose has agreed to be the moderator of the session.

On 18th January an intercollegiate treasure hunt is being organised at 9.30AM. Prizes worth Rs.50, 000/- are in store for the winners

On 20th January Platinum Jubilee year grand alumni meet followed by the much awaited cultural night every heartian’s heart throb 'heartifest'. On the occasion former students who have crossed the age of 75 and senior teachers who rendered their service for the will be honoured.
