Kozhikode: Youngsters seeking guidance on building a career can get a few tips from Rebecca George Thariyan. When the Kozhikode native planned to study genetics, even her close relatives were sceptical. However, Rebecca was determined to pursue her studies as well as a career in a field that was of her liking. Her efforts have paid off and she is now at the internationally renowned Max Planck Institute carrying out research on ageing process.

Rebecca chose to study B Tech in genetic engineering from SRM Institute of Science and Technology and went to Cologne in Germany for her higher studies. Chasing her dream of making it big in the field of Genetics, she soon earned a PhD.

"In another six months I will complete my post-doctoral fellowship and have a clear idea on my future plans," says the young scientist.

Rebecca's father George Jacob Thariyan had passed away while she was just 8 years old. It was her mother Mariyam Thariyan who brought up Rebecca after that. Her father was the head of the Physical Education department at Calicut University. Her mother, a teacher, gave total support to Rebecca in following her dreams.

During her free time, Rebecca likes to read and play football. Even while she is busy with research, Rebecca does not miss her favourite hobbies. Her message for youngsters is that they need to take their own career decisions and pursue their dreams instead of being led by parents or teachers to study courses which they do not like.
