Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan's seven-year-old son Mark Shankar, who was injured at a fire that broke out in a Singapore shophouse on Tuesday, has been transferred to a local hospital. The politician-actor said that Mark is going through a bronchoscopy under general anaesthesia. "I don't know what its long-term impacts are," he said, reacting to the incident, in which Mark's hands, legs and lungs (due to smoke inhalation) were reportedly injured.
A minimally invasive procedure in which doctors check the airways and lungs of a patient, bronchoscopy is generally used to remove foreign objects and mucus plugs from the body, alongside widening narrow or blocked airways, placing medicine in the lungs and also to diagnose other lung diseases. A doctor might also refer a person to a bronchoscopy if they have a constant cough or an abnormal chest X-ray, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Why it is done on fire accident survivors
Inhalational injury, which is damage to the lungs and respiratory tracts due to inhaling hot gases, smoke or chemicals, is apparently a major cause of death among fire accident victims, according to the Indiana University Pulmonary and Critical Care. It also increases the risk of pneumonia, regardless of the risk of injuries to the skin. Bronchoscopy, which is considered a better clinical exam for inhalational injury, is to be performed on a patient within 24 hours of the fire accident. The National Institute of Health also says bronchoscopy is 'gold standard' for early evaluation of injuries in burns patiencts. It would help treat their injuries better.
The children were at the shophouse for education and enrichment classes at River Valley Road in Singapore. Six adults and 16 children were injured in the incident and a girl also lost her life. 'Mark Shankar' has seen a significant rise in Google Trends over the past 22 hours with more than 10K searches, reflecting widespread concern and support for him following the tragic incident.
