Poets and literary geniuses often say that your eyes can convey a thousand emotions, but it is also true that your eyes can show the first signs of many diseases, including heart attacks, diabetes and cancer. In an article published in the Conservation Journal, Langis Michaud, an ophthalmologist at the School of Optometry at the University of Montreal, wrote that tiny lesions are seen in the back of the eye at the initial stages of diabetes. About 25% of type 1 diabetic patients and 40% of type 2 diabetic patients who take insulin shots suffer from some eye defect.
It is not just diabetes; the symptoms of high blood pressure can also be seen in the eyes. The article indicates that the blood vessels in the eyes of high blood pressure patients would be prominent. Besides, high blood pressure could contract the blood vessels in the eyes and damage the retina. Meanwhile, high cholesterol could lead to the Hollenhorst plague, created when plaque from somewhere else in your body breaks free and blocks a blood vessel in the retina. Hazy vision, white, yellow and green rings around the cornea and yellow lumps around the eye are some of the symptoms of high cholesterol.
Symptoms to look for
Retinoblastoma, which is a cancer affecting the eyes, could spread to the liver and lungs. So, looking for the symptoms in the eye is important to make early diagnoses. Meanwhile, a few irregularities in the retinal pigment are related to colon cancer. Some vision field tests could give clues about serious illnesses like tumours in the brain. Unusual movement of the eyes, imbalanced responses of the eyeballs and double visions are some of the symptoms related to eye and nerve disorders that demand immediate attention. The article warns that these symptoms in the eyes may be signs of underlying diseases that should not be ignored.
