Son's gift to mother: A cost-effective 'growing house' in Ochira

Small houses are making a comeback in Kerala. The overall size of houses is decreasing. The most sought-after houses in the construction sector are cost-effective ones. Let's look at the features of a house that is popular among the common people. The house, built in Ochira, in 1100 square feet area was completed for Rs 23 lakh, including structure and furnishing. The elevation is a flat box shape with a clean white finish.

The new house was built after demolishing an old, inconvenient house. The son is an expatriate. Only the mother currently lives in the house. Therefore, the spaces are designed simply, keeping maintenance in mind.

Within the 1100 square feet are a sit-out, living room, dining area, kitchen, work area, two bedrooms, one attached bathroom, and one common bathroom. This house is built on the 'growing house' concept. In the future, additional rooms can be added upwards as finances allow for expansion.

The main door opens into the living room. It features a readymade L-shaped sofa, coffee table, and TV unit. The semi-open design and the use of white on the floors and walls give the interiors a spacious feel. The stairs are located in the central hall. There is a pebble courtyard below the stairs.

The bedrooms are designed to maximize space utilization. Both bedrooms are 10X10 feet in size. The kitchen is compact. The kitchen cabinets are made of WPC (Wood Plastic Composite). The counter has artificial tiles. A work area is also included. Upstairs, there is only a stair room and an open terrace. A small bay window seating is provided on the first landing of the stairs. There is also a skylight above, allowing ample light.
