Sadanandan and his wife Bhanumathi are extremely proud of their unique house that has awed everyone with its smart construction. Their amazing house in Vallikunnam in Alappuzha district stands on a small piece of land that is just one cent. Sadanandan is a construction worker while Bhanumathi is employed under the MGNREGA scheme. This is the incredible tale of the determination of a working class family that had toiled hard to build their dream dwelling. They have used their life’s savings to build this small yet charming abode. Interestingly, the pictures of this house had become viral on the social media too.
The couple had to sell their old house to repay the debts after the marriage of their daughter. They then lived in rented homes for almost 8 years. All they had was a 3 cents plot near their ancestral home. Many dissuaded them from building their house in that small rectangular plot. They were even denied a bank loan saying that the plot is too small to build a house. The couple says that even the panchayat officials refused to help them financially.
Finally, architect Shivakumar, who is also a close relative, took up the challenge of designing a comfortable house here. The house stands in just 1 cent. 1.5 cents of land has been left vacant in the front so that the family can add more rooms, if required, in the future. Besides, half cents land has been left as the backyard.
The house has been designed in the concept of a train compartment. The rooms are designed on either sides of the long corridor, just like in a train compartment. Designed in 420 sqft, this quaint house has a living area, dining cum bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and a master bedroom.
Materials of high quality have been used for construction, anticipating extension works in the future. The walls are built after constructing pillar foundation. The construction of this beautiful house including the structure and furnishing was completed on a low budget of Rs 7.5 lakh.
“A house of our own, where we could spend the rest of our lives was our biggest dream. We are extremely happy that we could achieve that with the money that we had earned by working hard,” Bhanumathi’s eyes shine with pride and joy.
