Meccah: The Saudi Red Crescent Authority has installed Automated External Defibrillators (AED) at the Grand Masjid for rapid response to treat cases of cardiac arrests. AED, which is a portable machine used to treat someone who has had a cardiac arrest, has been installed at 15 locations inside the Masjidul Haram. This machine can treat cardiac arrest cases by delivering an electric shock through the chest to restore normal heart rates. Medical responders can intervene quickly through cardiopulmonary revival even before the ambulance arrives. Scientific studies have proven that the lives of those who suffer sudden cardiac arrest could be saved using such machines. Meanwhile, the Red Crescent officials supervised the installation of these machines at various spots inside the Masjid.

How to use defibrillators?
According to the American Red Cross, here’s how to use an AED correctly. These steps are for non-breathing children or adults aged eight or older and weighing more than 55 pounds. To begin with, alert a bystander to call an ambulance and then:
1) Turn on the AED and follow its voice prompts
2) Remove all clothing covering the chest. If required, wipe the area dry.
3) Fix one pad of the AED on the upper right side of the chest
4) Fix the other pad on the lower left side of the chest. It should be a few inches below the armpit.
5) If needed, plug the pad connector cable to the AED
6) Make sure no one is touching the person
7) Let the machine analyse the person’s heart’s rhythm
8) If the AED determines a shock is necessary, let it deliver it
9) If the machine advises against delivering a shock, immediately start CPR with compressions.
