She has fond memories about her ancestral home in Pampady, Kottayam. She grew up in a joint family and loved the unity and bond among the kin. The house was big enough to accommodate all the family members comfortably. It had elaborate storage spaces and attics, and a spacious courtyard filled with different types of trees and plants. The family had cows, goats, ducks, chickens and turkey for milk and eggs. Besides, Shalu had a parrot and a pet starling bird as well, which she adored.

Kurien Jacob and Jai Kurien are Shalu’s parents. Jacob Kurien is her only brother. The actress had completed her schooling and college education at Kottayam. She was just a plus two student when she made her mini screen debut.

It’s only been just two years since Shalu’s family shifted to a new house at Kangazha near Pambady. “I just had one demand while the house was being constructed. I was very particular that our house should be built following the rules of vastu. I believe in the positive powers of vastu. I have personally known many people haunted by misfortunes as their houses weren’t built based on vastu. So we began the construction only after showing the plan of the house to a vastu expert. It is a two-storey house in the contemporary style. It is my mother who did the interiors of the house,” explains Shalu.

In-laws' house

Shalu’s husband Melvin is a native of picturesque Ranni. Since her parents-in-law are settled in Mumbai, their house in Ranni is built in minimal style which makes it easy for maintenance. The family gathers in this house when Melvin’s parents come down to Kerala for vacation.

Shalu and Melvin decided to move to Cochin as most of her serials are shot there. “As I have lived comfortably in a house, stepping on the soil, all these years, I had many misconceptions about life in a flat. It was the kitchen that I would inspect first when we were hunting for a comfortable flat. I wanted a spacious kitchen. Finally we bought this one, which has all the qualities that I was looking for in a house. Our flat has spacious interiors and a beautiful balcony from where we can see the mesmerizing views of the city, enjoying the cool breeze,” notes the actress.
