Are you captivated by rock formations and find thrill in climbing them? If so, it's a great time to head to Wayanad, home to Arattupara, a stunning stone marvel that can give you some adventure vibes.
Spread across a large area near Bathery, the majestic rockscape has become a popular spot among Insta-generation tourists who have been capturing its essence on reels from many angles. Many people love to scale the rocks 3,500 feet above sea level, explore the nature around them and search for its story.

According to Subair Elakulam, Secretary of the Tourists Guides Association in Wayanad, the place rose to fame recently. "Unlike many other tourist spots nearby, there are no guides, security or such services in Arattupara. However, it's not an alienated spot and can be explored safely. Tourists can also hire guides from our Association and take them along while checking out the spot. Many people are exploring the region alone, but guides can help them be on the right and safest path," explains Subair.

What to see
A sprawling landscape of rocks shaped into arches, bridges, and slopes, all embraced by lush greenery. Subair recommends visiting during early mornings and evenings for the best experience. "December is ideal, but summer is also pleasant. It's a perfect spot to unwind and connect with nature," he says.

Activity possibilities
Those who love rock climbing can try 'conquering' big and small formations, following safety precautions. As of now, there aren't any adventure-related services available in the region.  However, if you like ancient structures, there are a few 'muniyaras', aboveground burial chambers from the time gone by.

From the top, you can see the Karapuzha River, a tributary of the Kabani River, and Karapuzha Dam, which is considered one of the biggest earth dams in India. One of the rocks on the top is named Makudapara, named so as it resembles a crown. There is also a 26-metre-long stone bridge.

Attractions nearby
Those who want to check out Arattupara can also club Cheengeri Hills, which is the other side of this rock formation, Phantom Rock, Edakkal Caves, Ambalayavayal and Karappuzha Dam into their one-day trip in the region, recommends Subair.
How to go
To reach Arattupara, travel along the Calicut-Mysore-Kollegal National Highway 212. From here, head to the Meenangadi Route 54, next to Ambalavayal via Kumbaleri. After travelling for 4 km along this road, you can reach AKG Junction. Just a 10-minute walk on the road to Rattukundu, and you reach right below Arattupara.
