From April 1, there will be restrictions on the number of vehicles that can enter Ooty and Kodaikanal, two of the top tourist locations in South India. Only 6,000 vehicles will be allowed to enter Ooty on weekdays, and on weekends, 8,000. While 4,000 vehicles will be allowed on weekdays in Kodaikanal, 6,000 will be allowed to enter on weekends. The order was passed on Thursday by the Madras High Court. Meanwhile, there will be no restrictions on the movement of local vehicles or the transport of farming products. The restrictions will be on till June. The measures are taken following efforts to fix the capacity of ghat roads to carry vehicles. Studies say that Nilgiris can accommodate only about 20,000 tourists at a time, including those residing in forest departments, Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, PWD and horticulture facilities.

What should tourists know?
1) Tourists should take e-passes to enter the regions. You can book the passes from here. Plan your trip well in advance to secure e-passes.
2) Priority will be given to electric vehicles while issuing e-passes.
3) There are no restrictions on tourists who arrive by train and government buses. Therefore, consider using public transportation to check out these spots. You can also avoid the hassle of taking e-passes.
4) If you are using your own vehicle, select off-peak days for your travel, as there is an increased chance of getting an e-pass.
5) Prepare for delay at checkpoints for verification of e-pass.
