The traditional Chinese practice of feng shui suggests various methods to usher in prosperity in your home. Wind chimes comprise a set of hollow metal pipes that create pleasant sounds when they hit each other.
In most houses a wind chime is fixed facing the front door. As a result, it produces a sound whenever guests arrive. As per feng shui, the guests whose arrival is accompanied by the sweet music from the chime would be conveyors of good luck. However, there are certain rules to be followed while deciding the position of the chime. In case these specifications are violated, instead of prosperity several negative incidents could occur in the house, says feng shui.
To cast away bad luck, feng shui suggests hanging a wind chime with five pipes in the house. In case a chime with six pipes is chosen, it should be installed in the north-western corner of the house. On the other hand, the ideal spot for a chime having seven pipes is western side of the residence or office. In other words, you cannot fix the wind chime in all corners of the building.
Feng shui recommends chimes with 6, 7, 8 or 9 hangings which have to be installed near the front door. In case the chime is fixed somewhere inside, sufficient airflow has to be ensured so that the pipes sway and produce music.
Several types of wind chimes are available in the market. They come in different sizes and colours. While some are priced low others are expensive. The most common types have steel, wood or copper pipes.
Feng shui uses the word ‘Chi’ to describe the positive energy emerging from the wind chime. It is believed that this energy can influence the health, happiness and fortune of a person.
Wind chimes made of metal have to be fixed at the north-western side. On the other hand, wooden chimes need to be hung mainly at the eastern or north-eastern side of the building. If you wish to achieve fame and recognition, the wind chime has to be present at the southern side of the house or office. Feng shui experts say that when a wind chime is installed at the right spot, positive vibes spread in the house or office.
Another feng shui rule regarding wind chimes relates to the number 9. As the number 9 and southern direction are connected as per this Chinese system, a wind chime made of wood having 9 pipes has to be installed at the southern side of the building.
