Kochi: Cakes, with all their culinary grandeur and edible sweet décor, have a short span of life. But that does not dissuade Romeos and Juliets in Kochi from presenting them to their sweethearts as a gift on Valentine’s Day.

If bakers in the city are to be believed, red roses, coffee mugs, and teddy bears - the eternal lover’s day gifts - have now made way for these cute little cups of joy.

They come draped with swirls of chocolate and other delicious flavors. They look simple, sans any elaborate decoration, with the paper cup carrying a Valentine’s Day message. The most popular varieties include Belgium Red Velvet, Chocolate Choki, Butter Cookies, No-Bake Chocolate etc.

“We get lots of orders during this period of time, especially from college students,” says Aayisha Yahiya, the founder of Kochi-based home bakery Cake 'O' Clock.

“Cake is definitely a sign of happy times. Moreover, it is much cheaper compared to other common Valentine’s Day gifts,” she adds.

A box of Belgium Red Velvet Cake containing six pieces comes with a price tag of Rs 750. There is a wide range of costly and cheaper varieties to choose from.

The growing demand for cupcakes has resulted in bakers in and around Kochi increasing their production during the days ahead of the V-Day.
