Shiny Jacob Benjamin’s 'We Will Not Be Afraid' bags top honour at Kerala state TV awards

Thiruvananthapuram: 'We Will Not Be Afraid', directed by Shiny Jacob Benjamin, has been chosen as the best documentary at the Kerala State Television Awards. The documentary features the life and work of Malayali social worker Sudha Varghese, who is committed to changing the socially backward conditions faced by Dalit girls in Bihar. The prestigious award comprises Rs 15,000, a memento, and a note of appreciation.
Shiny Jacob Benjamin is a noted documentary filmmaker who has directed many documentaries, including two that have won national awards. Her 'Sword of Liberty', a documentary based on the life of freedom fighter Veluthambi Dalawa, won the award for the best biographical movie at the 65th National Awards.
'Ottayal', about social worker Daya Bai; 'Translated Lives', featuring the lives of Malayali nurses in Germany; and 'In Return: Just a Book about Fyodor Dostoyevsky', based on Perumbadavam Sreedharan’s bestselling novel 'Oru Sankeerthanam Pole', are some of her notable works.
The awards were announced by the Minister for Cultural Affairs, Saji Cherian. The award-winning documentary narrates the social, cultural, and educational interventions made by Sudha Varghese, aka Cycle Deedi, among the Musahirs, an Adivasi community in Bihar that consumes rats. Jolly Lonappan (Jollywood Production) is the producer of the movie. Shiny is the daughter of K.O. Benjamin and Shoshamma Benjamin, both natives of Punalur in Kollam, Kerala.
