I have had the fortune of watching Lalitha Chechi’s incredible acting moments from close quarters.
Emotions, expressions passed through her face like electric currents in a flash of seconds. She used to get into a character right from the moment the director said “action”. You can see Chechi in front of the camera; crying uncontrollably, grief-stricken or distressed. Emotions just came so naturally to her and her voice modulations can leave you wonder-struck.
A while ago, I was invited to a function “Lalitha Sundaram” which was organized in Thrissur to honour chechi. Her speech on the day surprised me.
Chechi said she could dub for Amaram film exceptionally well because of my help. Hence she was indebted to me for the honours and accolades she received for that work.
There’s an emotional scene in Manissinakkare of Lalitha chechi and Sheela parting. I still remember the quietness with which she did that scene.
Lalitha chechi has also acted as my wife. She was the wife of Nathunarayanan, the character played by me in Sathyan Anthikad’s film Kanalkaat. At that time many in cinema field including me, were captivated by Josey. Another character which astounded me was in the film Vartha in which Chechi played my mother.
Though KPAC Lalitha came from the drama field, the most peculiar thing about her was that she could quite comfortably adapt to any role and execute it brilliantly on any stage. In other words, her talent was not limited to any particular stage.
Sukumari Chechi and KPAC Lalitha were a mother and sister to families in Kerala. The void left by them can never be filled. Lalitha Chechi never took pride in the glitz and glamour of cinema. Chechi belonged to the masses and was one among them.
Lalitha chechi will remain in the hearts of people forever and ever.
