An enlarged prostate is one of the main reasons that causes urinary problems among older men. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), cancer and infection are some of the main diseases that affect the prostate glands. All these conditions lead to similar urinary problems in men.

Inflamed prostate
Patients suffering from urinary problems due to an inflamed prostate gland are treated based on the extent and severity of the disease. Changes in lifestyle and alpha blocker medicines are prescribed for prostate inflammation in the initial stages. However, patients who suffer from inability to pass urine, swollen kidneys and spotting excessive blood in urine may require surgery.

Infection
Infection in the prostate glands can lead to difficulties urinating, fever and chills, urinary tract infections, and septicaemia, which is a blood infection that occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream. Antibacterial medicines, alpha blockers and catheterisation are prescribed for those who suffer from inability to urinate. Besides, endoscopic removal of fungus or pull balls is done in patients who have puss in prostate glands.

Prostate cancer
Inability to urinate, severe pain in joints and back, fractures, weakening of legs and swelling are some of the symptoms of prostate cancer. Surgery can completely cure prostate cancer in the initial stages. However, hormone therapies, radiation and chemotherapy may be needed if the cancer has spread.
